My Vitriol have got this whole latent energy, coiled spring, tension thing sussed. They begin tonight’s set with a two-minute guitar driven, fever building intro, just to slap a few storeys onto the already heightened atmosphere of expectancy. A few statuesque poses later and there’s action, then reaction, then bodies start to fly.

“Always Your Way” and “Cemented Shoes” are smile widening, ground buckling songs. Som’s vocals wax and wane, sanguine to melancholic, flexing in and out like the floor beneath. Whilst “Wait a Minute”, a “Wipers” cover version, maintains a steady plateau of high pitch, high spirited, high jumping action. Before “Grounded”, with its floor searchingly restful tones feeds the mid gig jumping armistice.

“Losing Touch” is a calculated follow up, intro’d with a blast of guitars and a race for pedals. Seth emerges first and leaves double puncture marks on our eardrums. Midway through, and Som’s screaming with eyes tightly closed and head bowed. He’s on his own; everyone else is wide-eyed and fighting to keep heads on shoulders.

“Pieces” swoops and soars, perferrated by Ravi’s energetic drumming and all misted over by Som’s yearning vocals. Then up on the carpeted stage it’s time to cut some rug. Slow, Quick, Slow, Quick, that’s the way to go, now follow. Slow. “Tongue Tied” begins and gradually speeds up like some demented carousel. Quick. All flesh is reduced to a blur onstage and off. Slow. Flexing leads find rest and Som, Carolyn, Seth and Ravi remain fixed, Som poised, hand raised as if frozen mid swipe. Quick. One last eruption of energy which quickly breaks down into a shapeless mass of noise, then a bandless mass of noise and the only energy in the place lies in those loudly humming boxes down front.
